Dismay as Aberdeen bypass gets go ahead

Commenting on the news that ministers have granted permission for Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route
Dr Sam Gardner, Climate Change Policy Officer at WWF Scotland said:
"When you look at the Aberdeen bypass in the context of rising transport emissions and the targets of 42% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 in the Scottish Climate Change Act, this new road just simply should not be built. If it goes ahead, this traffic-generating road project will increase Scotland’s carbon emissions at a time when we are all trying to do everything we can to reduce them. This decision quite simply flies in the face of Scotland's ambition to be a low-carbon nation.
"The bypass as proposed is not a solution to the traffic of the north east, and if built, will damage the local, national and global environment. If Scotland is to live up to its pledge to be a world leader on climate change, then Minsiters must think again, and instead spend the money proposed for this road scheme on more sustainable, environmentally friendly public transport improvements as part of a progressive low carbon transport policy.
