Beauly - Denny announcement - WWF Scotland comment
6 January 2010
Commenting on the announcement today Director of WWF Scotland, Dr Richard Dixon, said:
"Scotland has set a great example with the strongest climate change legislation in the world, however for that example to be credible we must be seen to be delivering at home in all sectors from energy, transport to agriculture.
"We need to invest in infrastructure to deliver renewable electricity to the place it is needed. Beauly-Denny is an important north-south connection. Today's decision means Scotland should now up its renewables ambition and push on to achieve the Scottish Governement's intention to decarbonise the country's electricty supply by 2030.
"In approving this upgrade the Government has outlined a range of conditions which will deliver this important improvement to the electricity grid but also taken seriously the concerns of local communities.
"Scotland certainly needs to learn some lessons from this. The power industry and OFGEM need to make sure any future proposals are always about delivering the best possible scheme, and not just the cheapest. Climate change is so urgent that we can't possibly wait six years to get every bit of infrastructure we need to meet our climate targets."
